Abstract
LITTLE work seems to have been done on iron metabolism in the fowl, especially in the field of transport by serum. First, we investigated this mechanism in various mammals1 and later in the fowl2–4. Iron in the blood is attached to β1-globulin (transferrin or siderophilin), the transport mechanism of which seems to be common to higher vertebrates; but we found in the hen bird that there is a special behaviour during the laying season3,4.
