Abstract
THE characteristic red pigment of the bacterium, Serratia marcescens, is located within the cell. Recently1 evidence has been presented demonstrating that disruption of the bacterial cell releases pigment that is bound to particles. However, the origin and location within the cell of the particles and associated pigment were not established. The present communication presents evidence that the particulate, pig mented material is associated with the cell envelope of the micro-organism.
