Modes of Radiation-induced Cross-Linking in Hydrocarbon Polymers

Abstract

SINCE the earliest observations1,2 on the cross-linking of organic polymers by ionizing radiation, much research has been devoted to this phenomenon, but there remains no generally accepted mechanism applicable to all polymers3. For polyethylene it has been proposed4 that linkages between molecules arise from three independent processes:
