Abstract
WITH equipment assembled for the measurement of Townsend's α in highly pure hydrocarbon gases, it was thought interesting to carry out preliminary but careful measurements in a common diatomic gas. Now that satisfactory agreement has been reported for hydrogen1,8 which does not depend too critically on purity, it was hoped to confirm the latest results in pure nitrogen obtained by Harrison2, which differ from all other workers (and those to be presented here) by up to an order of magnitude.
