Abstract
DURING investigations on the utilization of pentoses by Azotobacter, production of acid was observed in many cases in media with arabinose or xylose as sole source of carbon. This acid production is easily demonstrated by inoculation of nitrogen-free agar plates containing 0.5 per cent xylose and 0.5 per cent glucose and undissolved calcium carbonate. In this medium a distinct clear zone develops around the colonies (Fig. 1).
