Tolerance of Skin Homografts related to Fatal Disease in Separated Rat Parabionts

Abstract

HOMOTRANSPLANTATION of viable tissue in adult individuals is possible only between identical or monozygotic twins. Successful homografting between dizygotic calves is due to anastomoses of placental vessels1. However, tolerance to homografts may be artificially induced2 if animals are exposed to foreign tissue antigens during fœal life. The upper limit of the period of tolerant response varies in different species but never extends far beyond birth3. In rats4 tolerance may be induced as late as the second week of life.
