Effect of Ionizing Radiation on Solid Catalysts

Abstract

IT has been recognized for some time that the activity of solid catalysts might be affected by ionizing radiations, and a number of workers have studied the effect of X-rays on catalysts. Clark, McGrath and Johnson1 observed a small increase in the activity of a platinum catalyst for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide in the presence of water vapour, and Harker2 reported an increase in the uptake of hydrogen from the gas phase by copper and palladium during irradiation. However, Emmett and Jones3 found that the speed of reaction of hydrogen and oxygen on a platinum/asbestos catalyst was not affected by irradiation, and Gotzky and Günther4 obtained negative results for the reaction of hydrogen and chlorine on a variety of catalysts.
