Vacuolated Neurones in Sheep Affected with Scrapie

Abstract

VACUOLATED nerve cells (neurones) have frequently been described in the medulla of sheep affected with scrapie1–3. Recently, similar vacuolation has been reported in clinically normal sheep4. Whether or not the vacuolation is directly associated with scrapie is therefore open to question, although in my experience the kind of vacuoles to be described later do not occur in healthy animals.
