Abstract
THE inhibition of proteolytic enzymes by organo-phosphorus esters has been the subject of intensive study in recent years1. Thus, the reaction of trypsin with diisopropyl fluorophosphonate2or diethyl p-nitrophenylphosphonate3 has been shown to be accompanied by a loss in its esterase and proteolytic activity. Still unanswered, however, is the question whether these inhibitors combine with trypsin at the site responsible for enzymatic activity, or at another site, which, because of its strategic location, may interfere sterically with the enzymatic centre.
