Abstract
2-CARBOXY-PYRROLE has been found as a hitherto unidentified component of mucoproteins. The presence of this component suggested itself from Odin's observation1 that many influenza virus hæmagglutinin inhibitory mucins produce a purple colour, even without alkali pretreatment, on heating with the p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde reagent. His findings have been extended to the prosthetic group of the pure inhibitory urine mucoprotein2, the homogeneous inhibitory mucoproteins from human saliva3, bovine and sheep submaxillary glands4, the non-inhibitory pure mucoprotein from human plasma5, the non-inhibitory ovomucoid6 and the proteins casein and ox-serum albumin.
