Crystal Structure of Ammonium Tetrameta-phosphate

Abstract

CRYSTALS of ammonium metaphosphate are biaxial, negatively birefringent, with rhombic symmetry 2/m 2/m 2/m, instead of tetragonal, as stated by Warschauer1. An X-ray investigation showed there are sixteen molecules of ammonium phosphate (NH4PO3) in the unit cell with dimensions of 10.40 A., 10.8 A. and 12.75 A. The space group is Cmca.
