Abstract
HIPTAGENIC acid, C3H5O4N, was originally isolated from the hydrolysate of hiptagin, a crystalline glycoside, m.p. 112° C., occurring in the bark of the tree, Hiptage mandoblata, by Gorter1. From a study of its properties the author ascribed to the acid the formula of a hydroxamic acid, namely, CHOH: COH.CO. NHOH. The acid was formed by the action of moderately concentrated hydrochloric acid on an acetone solution of hiptagen according to the equation :
