Abstract

IN statistical work, one of the commonest arithmetical operations is finding the sum of squares of deviations of a set of numbers from their mean, zero, or some other fixed point, often followed by extraction of the square root of the result. When a machine is not available, the calculations are very tedious and liable to error. I have, therefore, tried out a simple geometrical method, illustrated in .
