A New Ion Source for Mass Spectrometry

Abstract

THERE have been only two types of ion source which have been successfully applied in mass spectroscopy to isotopic abundace measurement and to quantitative chemical analysis. One is the hot-anode source, the other the source obtained by using an electron gun to bombard the entering gas stream. Only this second type is considered here ; it gives stable conditions of ionization and flexibility in control. The purpose of this communication is to describe a new model of this type of source ; but it will be well first to summarize briefly the aims in source design and to refer to the prevalent design.
