Activation of Unfertilized Sea Urchin Eggs by Trypsin

Abstract

PREVIOUS workers1,2 have reported that commercial trypsin, crystalline trypsin and chymotrypsin are all able to activate the nuclei of unfertilized sea urchin eggs. The elevation of fertilization membranes has also been reported after treatment with low concentrations of crystalline trypsin1. In unfertilized Pomatoceros eggs, crystalline trypsin and chymotrypsin cause the formation of typical fertilization cones, but do not activate the nuclei3.
