Abstract
THE study of birds has long absorbed the mind of man. Since the days of Willoughby, through the centuries to Bewick and St. John, and down to our own time, ardent naturalists have not been wanting to chronicle the habits of birds. The camera has brought an added, though harmless, weapon into the armoury of these naturalists. Had the camera been invented in St. John's day he might perhaps have laid aside his gun, and photographed, rather than shot, the ospreys and other rare Highland birds which he, keen naturalist though he was, did not hesitate to slay.
