Abstract
SOME years ago, we found1 that a growth substance acting upon Aspergillus niger and other moulds was produced when sugars (both pentoses and hexoses) were heated in a solution which also contained some organic acids or salts of these acids. This growth substance only acts when small amounts of ten different metals are added2. Also the growth substance produced by moulds or the growth substance extracted from plants, urine, etc., needs these metals to be able to influence the growth of moulds. We called these metals co-growth substances.
