Abstract
IN a paper read before the Royal Statistical Society on January 16, Mr. Geoffrey Crowther described the “Index of Business Activity” which has recently been prepared by the Economist. Mr. Crowther pointed out that, up to the present, it has not been possible to measure statistically the amplitude of fluctuations in the general activity of the community. Indices of production are familiar in most countries and in the absence of a more suitable index, they are frequently used as indications of business activity, though they have obvious weaknesses for this purpose.
