Abstract
IN his Friday evening discourse at the Royal In stitution on Feb. 5, Dr. G. C. Simpson discussed weather forecasting. In 1859, Admiral FitzRoy, who was then the head of the department of the Board of Trade which had recently been established to study marine meteorology, commenced to collect weather reports by telegraph from a number of ports in the British Isles, and so a new science was created and a new term added to the English language. FitzRoy's innovation was not approved by scientific men, and on his death in 1865 forecasting ceased.
