Abstract
(1) HE name of the author of this volume of the Wien-Harms “Handbuch” is a sufficient guarantee of its thorough and authoritative character. The subject matter can be briefly summarised by saying that it includes the whole of the science of energy (internal energy, E,η or U) for unaccelerated bodies and of enthalpy (Enthalpie, Wärmeinhalt, heat contents, total heat, U +pv), looked at mainly from the experimental point of view, together with enough thermodynamics or gas theory to make the whole intelligible. Allied problems, such as the production of high and low temperatures, properties at high and low pressures, the liquefaction of gases, and heat engineering in general, are dealt with in other volumes of the series.
