Abstract
OXFORD.—Junior Scientific Club, February 21.—Mr. H. B. Hartley (Balliol College) read a paper on liquid crystals, and showed, by microscopic demonstration upon the screen, experiments with para-azoxyanisol and para-azoxyphenetol which melt to doubly refracting liquids at 116° and 135° respectively. These remarkable bodies have not previously been shown in England; the curious transformations which they undergo were made clearly visible to a large audience.
