Abstract

THE Pacific Ocean is divided into basins by a series of island chains and submarine ridges. The most conspicuous chain begins in Malaysia, crosses New Guinea, and, sweeping round parallel to the eastern coast of Australia, runs past New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island to New Zealand.
