Student Pugwash USA's
Twentieth Anniversary
International Reunion Conference

University of California, San Diego
June 28 - July 4, 1999

Student Pugwash USA promotes the socially responsible application of science and technology in the 21st century. As a student organization, Student Pugwash USA encourages young people to examine the ethical, social, and global implications of science and technology, and make these concerns a guiding focus of their academic and professional endeavors.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Student Pugwash USA will hold an international reunion conference June 28 - July 4, 1999 at the University of California, San Diego, where Student Pugwash USA was founded in 1979. Two hundred of the most forward-looking individuals from over 30 countries will be selected to participate, including current students, international Student Pugwash alumni, renowned scholars, senior experts, and policy-makers.

The core of the conference will consist of ten working groups in which participants will explore the impact of rapid advances in science and technology. Prominent speakers, some of whom are Student Pugwash USA alumni, will provide insight on topics such as the social consequences of genetics, science and social responsibility, weapons and war in the 21st century, and science and public policy.

The format of the conference will allow for valuable interaction between young and senior participants, who will live and dine together on the UCSD campus. A series of social activities will provide further opportunities for participants to share their thoughts on these increasingly important topics. The conference will draw attention to Student Pugwash USA's role in helping to develop an international network of talented young people who seek to use science and technology to create a better world.
