Evolutionary alternation of diploidy and polyploidy
The figure shows the possible paths that result in the sudden transition from diploidy to polyploidy and the gradual transition from polyploidy to diploidy. The hybridization events that result in allopolyploidy are also illustrated. Polyploids are thought to arise suddenly from errors in meiosis or mitosis. The transition from a polyploidy to a diploid occurs much more gradually, as the functions of some duplicated genes diverge and some duplicated genes are lost from the genome.
