Wellcome Trust Research Training Programmes for Clinicians

Applications are invited for the autumn 2009 intake to the Wellcome Trust’s Research Training Programmes for Clinicians across the UK.

This programmes are flagship schemes aimed at supporting the most promising medically qualified clinicians who wish to undertake rigorous research training.

Successful candidates will develop their potential to become academic clinicians within a structured and mentored training environment.

The distinct type of programme have been established within institutions across the UK:

Joint PhD Programmes for Clinicians and Basic Scientists

Two joint PhD programmes for clinicians and basic scientists have been established, based in centres of excellence at Birmingham and The Institute of Cancer Research.

Each programme will provide the individual trainee with unique opportunities to sample high-quality basic and clinical research environments, and to develop a research proposal that is tailored to their individual interests.

Candidates will have the potential to pursue a career as an academic researcher. For medically qualified candidates it is anticipated that they will also have already commenced their specialist training but this is not essential.

Support includes a stipend or a medical salary, PhD registration fees at UK/EU student rate, research expenses, general training funds and some travel costs.
