The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Fisheries Physiological Ecology. One of the few Land, Sea, and Space Grant universities in the nation, UAF is noted for research expertise of Alaska’s vast freshwater and ocean resources, which include more than half of the nation’s coastline, three-quarters of the continental shelf, approximately three million inland lakes and thousands of miles of rivers and streams, and the largest fishery in the world. The SFOS has 60 faculty and more than 150 graduate students engaged in research in Alaskan waters and throughout the world. This tenure-track position will be located within the SFOS Fisheries Division in Fairbanks, and campus facilities and expertise are well suited to support broad, collaborative research interests. The modern UAF campus hosts 950 faculty and more than 8,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. Campus facilities provide state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of research, including the Advanced Instrumentation Laboratory (in the Department of Geology and Geophysics) that includes an electron microprobe, an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, a scanning electron microscope and an inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The Alaska Stable Isotope Facility is available for measuring the isotopic composition of a wide range of materials. Fairbanks is the hub for Alaska’s Interior and Arctic, and has first-class accommodations and restaurants, museums, some of Alaska’s top-rated visitor attractions, world-renowned concerts and performances, upscale galleries and specialty stores, historic sites, Alaska Native culture, and easy access to the Alaska wilderness.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate for this position will be expected to develop a dynamic, externally funded research program that utilizes field, laboratory, and/or modeling approaches to examine the physiological and/or behavioral ecology of fishes in freshwater and/or marine ecosystems of Alaska. Possible focal areas include, but are not limited to, reproductive physiology, ecological energetics, nutritional ecology, life-history strategies of fishes, biochemical measures of fish adaptation, effects of environmental perturbations on fish function, and/or predator-prey interactions. Opportunities exist for collaborative research with Fisheries Division (at the Fairbanks, Juneau, and Kodiak campuses), Institute of Marine Science, and Global Undersea Research Unit faculty in the areas of fishery population dynamics, fisheries management, fish and freshwater ecology, aquaculture, population genetics, bioenergetics, marine biology, and oceanography. There will be abundant opportunities to develop collaborative relationships with state (i.e., Alaska Department of Fish and Game) and federal (i.e., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) agencies which support these research initiatives. The successful candidate will also develop and teach two upper-division undergraduate/graduate courses in fish physiology, fish behavior, and/or an area of specialization in fish ecology, and an undergraduate and/or graduate seminar in an area of expertise. There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will participate in service activities, including university, regional, and national committees and advisory panels.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in fisheries biology, ecology, or a related field from an accredited university by the time of hire. Disciplinary expertise for this position should be in the areas of physiological and/or behavioral ecology of freshwater and/or marine fishes. Applicants must also be proficient in English, have university-level teaching ability, and must have a strong research and publication record appropriate to their experience and date of degree.
