The major measurements are (1) the degree of UES relaxation as measured by the nadir UES pressure, referenced to hypopharyngeal pressure; (2) the magnitude of the intrabolus pressure, as a measure of the resistance to flow across the UES; and (3) the presence or absence of pharyngeal peristalsis.
