The European Society for the Study and Prevention of Infant Death will hold a Conference on Prevention of Infantile Apnea and Sudden Infant Death: On the Verge of the Millennium. The Conference will be held May 30-June 4, 1999 in Jerusalem, Israel, at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Call for Nominations 1999 and 2000 Agnes Higgins Award

The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation is seeking nominations of qualified persons for the 1999 and 2000 "Agnes Higgins Award."

The award is presented in recognition of distinguished achievement in research, education or clinical services in the field of maternal-fetal nutrition.

The candidate must have:

    been widely involved in maternal-fetal nutrition through teaching, research and/or clinical practice for at least five years;

  2. 2

    shown a demonstrable effect in raising the quality of maternal-fetal nutritional care through scholarly pursuits, research, education and/or practice;

  3. 3

    demonstrated ability to apply maternal-fetal nutritional standards of practice and/or facilitate their implementation by others.

Established in 1980, the award honors the late Agnes Higgins of the Montreal Diet Dispensary. Her innovation and years of service to the cause of improved maternal nutrition have contributed to the well-being of thousands of babies.

Winners for both years will be selected in 1999. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 1999.

The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation Chair in Paediatrics Research

The University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine invites applications and nominations for The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation Chair in Paediatrics Research. The Alberta Children's Hospital is the child health tertiary care institution for southern Alberta and has a vibrant series of research programs.

The successful candidate will be a distinguished scholar with an international reputation in research, and will provide leadership in planning and coordinating the development of collaborative interdisciplinary research program in paediatric medicine and/or surgery; pursue research oriented toward the health of children; promote service and educational programs in relation to ongoing paediatric research, thereby fostering a bench-to-bedside and community approach; encourage liaison with related adult programs; and attract outstanding students, research associates, and faculty.

Academic Paediatrics

The University of Calgary Department of Paediatrics and the Calgary Regional Health Authority invite applications for two full-time academic positions at the Assistant Professor level or higher. Calgary is a vibrant, multicultural city of 800,000 near the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park and Lake Louise.

  • Paediatric Gastroenterology - This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop an independent research program in a multidisciplinary research environment. As a member of the Gastrointestinal Research Group, the incumbent will join a group of investigators studying basic and applied aspects of Gl disease. Start-up and salary support will be provided through successful application to the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and/or the Medical Research Council of Canada. While 75% of time will be protected for research, duties also include patient care and teaching. Research productivity and funding is required, as well as certification in Paediatrics with experience in paediatric gastroenterology.

  • Paediatric Intensivist - We are seeking an experienced critical care physician to participate in patient care, teaching and research. The successful candidate may also be considered for the position of Head of the Division of Paediatric Critical Care Medicine. Certification in Paediatric Critical Care or equivalent training is required, as well as experience in paediatric critical care medicine, and a demonstrated record of research and teaching.

Qualifications for both position include an MD or equivalent, certification and experience as noted, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta.
