Abstract
Peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) is an excellent tracer of photochemical activity in the troposphere. We have obtained results at Harwell which show a large increase in the concentration in background air in springtime. We suggest that this indicates that tropospheric photochemistry may contribute to the spring maximum in the tropospheric ozone concentration in the Northern Hemisphere, which has traditionally been ascribed to increased transfer of air from the stratosphere.
