Abstract
We have carried out high-temperature distillation experiments at 5 × 10−5 torr on terrestrial pyroxene crystals and measured24Mg, 25Mg and 26Mg simultaneously using a 61-cm multi-cup mass spectrometer. The raw data were corrected for isotope fractionation using the power law and the Rayleigh law. Regardless of the correction procedure, the sample residues are depleted in 26Mg and the condensates are enriched in 26Mg, relative to non-distilled standards. These effects mimic the 'isotope anomalies' in Mg observed in Allende coarse- and fine-grained inclusions, previously attributed to nucleosynthetic processes involving 26Al.
