Lake of Lugano and topographic waves

Abstract

During the summer of 1979, wind, water temperature and current measurements were made in the Lake of Lugano, Switzerland, to study its response to meteorological forcing. Analysis of the collected data revealed the presence of wind-induced internal gravity wave seiches with periods of 24 h and less1. However, during this study, an intriguing 3-day oscillation in the temperature and horizontal current records was also noted1. We present here evidence which suggests that this low-frequency oscillation is a free topographic Rossby wave that travels around the lake in an anticlockwise direction.
