Suppression of a yeast amber mutation in Escherichia coli

Abstract

THE complementation of Escherichia coli auxotrophs by cloned eukaryotic genes1–4 makes it possible to use standard bacterial genetic techniques to study these eukaryotic genes. Here, we describe the cloning of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) gene with an amber suppressible allele. Reversion and suppression properties of this allele are examined in growing E. coli cells.
