Energetic protons near the plasma sheet boundary

Abstract

IT has long been evident that energetic particles are produced in the Earth's magnetotail in association with magnetospheric substorms1–6. These particles may be important in producing ionospheric effects such as auroral zone absorption and they also lead to the injection of energetic particles into the interplanetary medium. We provide here an interpretation for the behaviour of a class of very intense, short-lived bursts of protons and other ions which appear at the edge of the plasma sheet during the expansion phase of substorms.
