Abstract
CRAIG and Brown1 have repeated their doubts about the usefulness of high resolution X-ray spectra2 and reiterated a series of inaccurate and misleading statements. For example, as early as their second sentence they incorrectly claim that “a high resolution spectrometer is almost invariably included in solar X-ray satellites”. High spectral resolution can only be achieved with a collimated spectrometer, the total useful observing time of all such rocket borne devices being currently of the order of an hour. But no solar satellite has ever carried such a spectrometer and only one such device is planned to be in orbit before 1980.
