Factors controlling grain weight in wheat

Abstract

THE physiological factors controlling differences in grain weight between cultivars of wheat are not fully resolved. The experiments described here indicate that final grain weight in two cultivars of wheat is mainly dependent on the rate of accumulation of dry matter, which in turn is governed by the number of endosperm cells formed. Cell number in the endosperm seems to be regulated by the supply of assimilates available to the grain during the first 2 weeks after anthesis.
