Rotational diffusion of band 3 proteins in the human erythrocyte membrane

Abstract

Band 3 proteins rotate in the human erythrocyte membrane; rotation is almost certainly confined to an axis normal to the plane of the membrane and is characterised by a diffusion coefficient of the order of 1,000 s−1. Spectrin does not restrict rotational motion of band 3 proteins.
