Action of papaverine and ionophore A23187 on neurulation

Abstract

MICROFILAMENTS, which are thought to be activated by Ca2+, are functionally related to the apical constriction of neural plate cells during neural tube morphogenesis. Papaverine interferes with Ca2+ flux and inhibits neurulation, disrupting microfilament structure, while ionophore A23187 which induces Ca2+ flux counteracts this inhibition restoring microfilaments and promoting formation of neural ridges and folds in 10 min. We conclude that microfilament-generated morphogenetic movement may be regulated, in part, by Ca2+ availability.
