Type I supernovae and galactic production of iron

Abstract

CURRENT models of galactic chemical evolution (see ref. 1) assume that heavy elements are produced by massive stars, that is, in type II supernova events. We show here that Fe may have a different source from other heavy elements—in type I supernovae which result from the deaths of moderately long lived stars.
