Morphine elevates levels of cyclic GMP in a neuroblastoma X glioma hybrid cell line

Abstract

THE use of cell lines derived from tumours of the nervous system as models for both neurones and glia has become well established. Clonal lines derived from mouse neuroblastoma C1300 have been shown to possess many properties characteristic of neurones1. Several such properties are more strongly expressed in hybrids between mouse neuroblastoma and rat glioma cells2–4. They contain choline acetyltransferase2–4, clear and dense core vesicles5 and dopamine-β-hydroxylase4. In the presence of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) the hybrid cells strongly increase their intracellular levels of cyclic AMP6. The effect of PGE1 is antagonised by noradrenaline7, acetylcholine8 and morphine9–11. The latter finding is in agreement with that in brain homogenates12. In addition, morphine receptors could be detected in the hybrid cells13.
