Abstract
When stimulated by external electrodes, a frog muscle fibre bathed in hypertonic Ringer gives a birefringence signal consisting of three components. The small first component is due to the action potential of the surface membrane, and the much larger second component may be related to voltage change across the sarcoplasmic reticulum associated with the release of Ca2+. The third component is of uncertain origin.
