Abstract
DRS VOGT AND JOHNSON REPLY: We re-emphasise that we never attributed all of, or even most of, the amplitude variations of oceanic magnetic anomalies to the chemistry of basalt. We simply proposed that chemistry does play a role in certain areas and should not in any case be ignored as a possible factor. Even if the hypothesis explains only three areas of high amplitude anomalies1 this amounts to about 8 × 105 km2 of oceanic crust, certainly more than a very restricted marine geological circumstance.
