Abstract
A TRACT of approximately 100 nucleotides, containing 80–90 cytidylic acid residues (poly(C)) has been found within the genome of encephalomyocarditis virus1 (EMCV). We have sought to establish whether this unusual structural feature is also present in other animal picornaviruses, including those of human and veterinary importance, such as rhino-, foot-and-mouth disease and swine vesicular disease viruses. The composition and extent of occurrence of poly(C) in a variety of picornaviruses might indicate whether it has a role in any of the processes which are common to all of these viruses, such as penetration, replication and assembly2. Furthermore, if poly(C) is a virus-specific feature, it might prove feasible to devise antiviral chemotherapeutic strategies based upon its presence.
