In vitro suppression of cell mediated autoimmunity in NZB mice

Abstract

THE spontaneous autoimmune disease of NZB mice is characterised by the development of a variety of autoantibodies, particularly those reacting with autologous erythrocytes as demonstrated by a positive direct Coombs test. The onset of autoantibody production coincides with thymic hyperplasia and is followed by splenomegaly and glomerulonephritis1. All the tissues contain murine leukaemia virus particles (type C) visible on electron microscopy2 and Gross antigen is detectable immunologically3. This virus is vertically transmitted, yet antibodies have been shown to develop to Gross antigen at the time the direct Coomb's test becomes positive4. The role of this virus, if any, in the aetiology of the autoimmune features is still unclear but it has been suggested that this progressive loss of tolerance to Gross antigen is of pathogenetic importance4,5.
