Abstract
WE have applied the fission track technique to the determination of thorium in glasses. Neutron-induced fission occurs for thorium and uranium, the isotopes 232Th, 235U and 238U fissioning with fast neutrons, and 235U with thermal neutrons. Two irradiations are performed. The first irradiation is with predominantly thermal neutrons for determination of the uranium content (comparing to a standard and knowing the isotopic ratio of uranium) and the second irradiation is with predominantly fast neutrons which gives the uranium and thorium contents combined. The ‘track excess’ from the second irradiation, when the unknown is again compared to a uranium standard, is attributed to thorium fission.
