Sucrose Induction of Hepatic Hyperplasia in the Rat

Abstract

SUCROSE in the diet1 of rats leads to production of livers heavier than those of rats fed diets with starch2. We report here experiments to determine whether the increase in liver size induced by sucrose is due to an increase in cell size (hypertrophy) or to an increase in cell number (hyperplasia) or to both.
