Control of Nuclear RNA Synthesis in 2-Cell and 4-Cell Mouse Embryos

Abstract

CHANGING patterns of RNA synthesis during early embryological development have been well established in a number of organisms1–3. In the mouse, very small amounts of only high molecular weight RNA synthesis can be detected at the 2-cell stage4. Nucleolar RNA synthesis begins during the 4-cell stage5,6 and newly made ribosomal and transfer RNAs can be detected at this stage4,7,8. The overall increase in RNA synthesis per cell between the 2 and 4-cell stages of mouse development is between five and ten-fold4.
