Abstract
FOLLOWING the establishment of an association between exposure to asbestos dust and the development of diffuse mesotheliomas of the pleura and peritoneum1,2 investigations into the relative risks of exposure to the various types of asbestos fibre were made. Our studies were on an epidemiological3 and experimental4 basis. Experimental studies using both intrapleural inoculation and inhalation methods are time consuming as results cannot be expected in less than three years from the initiation of investigation, and a more flexible biological method was needed for these studies, because the major types of asbestos were found to have variations in structure and trace element associations. We therefore decided to investigate the possibilities of using organ culture techniques.
