146Sm: A Chronometer for p-Process Nucleosynthesis

Abstract

UNTIL now, nucleosynthetic chronologies have been proposed only for r-process nuclei1–5. Nucleosynthesis of the rare proton-rich isotopes is generally attributed to an as yet poorly understood p-process1. We propose the use of the p-process radioisotope, 146Sm(τ½ = 7×107 yr), as a possible nucleochronometer. The development of a p-process chronology would provide information about when the p-process occurred, which might provide a clue regarding the astrophysical site of the p-process.
