Abstract
MERCURY in the environment has been a recent topic of discussion1–4. According to Hammond2 there are no quantitative measurements of the movement of mercury through the environment. The standards for mercury levels (5 µg l.−1 for drinking water, 0.5 p.p.m. for consumable fish) which have been adopted in the United States are based on toxicity to humans but the effects of mercury on lower forms of life have received scant attention.
