Lack of Correlation between Conversion by RNA Tumour Viruses and Increased Agglutinability of Cells by Concanavalin A and Wheat Germ Agglutinin

Abstract

ALTERATIONS in the cell surface seem to accompany neoplastic transformation of cells in culture. Such alterations may affect cell orientation and control of cell multiplication. Recently, interest has focused on the accessibility to various plant glycoproteins of specific receptor sites on the cell surface as a measure of specific changes in the cell surface accompanying transformation induced by various carcinogenic agents, including the DNA tumour viruses1–6. We are not, however, aware of any published work dealing with the effects of infection with RNA tumour viruses on the response of cells to such glycoproteins.
